The start of the ski season is apon us and we are personally very jealous of anyone who is hitting the slopes this side of the year. We have a trip booked in March and we are hopeful that Covid won’t stop us from going this year! Skiing is an absolute passion of ours and we try to get to the slopes each year, so packing for a ski trip is second nature to us. Below we have written what we recommend taking on a ski holiday.
Equipment
Renting equipment can often be quite expensive but necessary if you don’t ski that often. There is some equipment that you will need that you won’ be able to rent very easily. We have listed these below. You should purchase these before you go skiing.
Goggles or ski glasses

Gloves
Equipment that you can rent
Helmet
Although you are able to rent a helmet, they aren’t too expensive and it might be worth buying your own. You can get your money’s worth from just a couple of ski trips.
Ski Boots
We have both purchased our own boots as they are much more comfortable and we go skiing most years, so the money we paid was worth it. If you do buy them, you can transport them by using a boot bag as hand luggage, so that it doesn’t take up all the weight you are allowed in your suitcase.
Skis
We don’t have our own skis, mainly because of the hassle it is to get them on the plane and we also like to try out different ski types.
Poles
Unless you go skiing a lot, it probably isn’t worth buying poles. Poles can be rented for either a very small amount or are included in the price of renting skis.
Clothing
- Thermals
- Salopettes
- Jumpers
- Ski jacket
- Ski socks
You will also need to pack normal clothing that you could wear after you are skiing, for example, if you are going out to a restaurant or just lounging about in your hotel room.
Nice to haves
Below are things that you don’t NEED to pack, but are essentials for our skiing trips!
Go Pro
Go Pro’s are not only waterproof but they can also be strapped to either your body or helmet, which makes them perfect for filming whilst you are skiing.
GoPro Hero 7 Silver – 4K HD Digital Action Camera, 10 MP, Silver
Rucksack
It is a good idea to take a rucksack when you go skiing so that you can bring things that won’t fit in your ski jacket pockets. It is a good idea to find a rucksack that is waterproof like the one we have attached because then your possession will be protected if you fall over in the snow or place it down when it is wet.
Flask
What is better than drinking hot coffee on the top of our snowy mountain? Maybe if it was mulled wine instead! If you want to be able to take hot drinks out onto the slopes with you, then taking a flask is a great idea.
Hip Flask

If you want something a bit strong on the slopes, then a hip flask is a perfect addition to your ski equipment. Usually, hip flasks are small enough to fit inside a ski jacket pocket, so even if you aren’t taking a rucksack you can still have it on you.
Hand and feet warmers
It can get very cold up on the mountains, especially whilst you are sitting on chairlifts or sitting outside of a restaurant having some food or a drink. Hand and feet warmers have saved the day for us multiple times and make the cold winds that often occur high up the mountains, bearable.
Cards
After a long day of skiing, you might find that you just want to chill out and play some cards. We always pack a deck wherever we go, because you never know when you might be stuck bored either at an airport or if the weather is bad, stuck in your hotel room.
Portable charger

Having a charged phone whilst you are skiing is important for many reasons. You might want to be able to take good photos and videos whilst on the slopes, however, it is important that you have your phone on you for safety reasons as well. If you get stuck anywhere or someone gets hurt, you can call someone for help.
Sun cream and lip balm
Not everyone realises that it is very easy to get sunburnt whilst you are skiing. This is because the sunlight reflects off the snow and onto your face and neck. It is important to wear sun cream on sunny days and lip balm with SPF protection in it, to stop your lips from getting burnt too.
Plug adaptors
If you are travelling abroad then you need to remember that you should bring plug adaptors so that you can use your appliances in a different company. The ones we have linked are great, as they work in many different countries, so you don’t need to buy different ones if you go to different places.
Extra things to remember to bring
- Record of travel insurance
- ID
- Tissues
- First aid kit
- Blister plasters
