There is no better feeling than knowing you can go anywhere you want, and your bed is always with you! It means that you can hit the open road and not be tied to accommodation. Earlier this winter we took a campervan trip around the south coast and learnt a lot about campervanning in the winter. Below we have compiled a list of what we found handy to have whilst we were away and some things, we wish we had brought with us.
Warm bedding
Probably the most obvious thing to pack, but important nevertheless, warm bedding will be your best friend when campervanning in the winter. We bought a double winter sleeping bag with us as well as a duvet and this kept us super warm every night.
A good power bank
In the winter you will likely want to save you electricity and gas for heating up your campervan. Take a good power bank with you that has multiple charges. This way you can save your campervans energy and ensure that your devices are always charged up.
Water bottles and handwarmers
Hen we went away I brought a water bottle with me. It was handy to just heat up some water and put the water bottle in the bed to keep it toastie. I also brought some hand and foot warmers with me to use when we were out on hikes. These stay warm for hours and can stop your hands and feet from feeling frozen.
Wet wipes
If you don’t have a shower in your campervan or you are trying to conserve water, showers might not always be your friend in the winter, as no one likes traipsing across a cold and dark field to get to the campsite facilities. Wet wipes are super handy to have with you in case you need to clean yourself or inside the van.
Microfibre towels
In the winter it is a lot harder for towels to dry in the cold. Microfibre towels are a great addition to your campervan in the winter as they dry much quicker than normal towels.
Torches
It gets dark much earlier in the winter. So whether you are going on an afternoon hike or you are using facilities at a campsite, you will need to ensure that you have a torch with you. It is also a good idea to have a light that can be hung in your campervan, in case something goes wrong with your electrics or you are trying to save energy.
Entertainment
In the winter the weather might be quite trecious and you might find yourself spending more time in the campervan at the end of the day than you might in the summer. Make sure you bring things to entertain you. We bought cards, other games, books, and my charged-up laptop that had 15 hours worth of charge in it. Our favourite two player game which is super lightweight and small to bring around witth you is P for Pizza!
Tire blocks
Try to avoid parking on grass or mud during the winter as you can get stuck quite easily in the wetter weather. We had tire blocks which are used to help level out the van and meant that we could park on slopes, helping when we had limited options of where to park.
